The Munib & Angela Masri Foundation, in partnership with Taawon and the Global Health Institute at the American University of Beirut (AUB GHI), launched a national initiative to rebuild Gaza’s rehabilitation services for amputees. Developed under the patronage of the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the initiative establishes a coalition framework and a twenty-year roadmap for recovery.
This joint effort responds to the unprecedented scale of injuries in Gaza, where over 167,000 people have been wounded, with nearly one in four requiring long-term, multidisciplinary rehabilitation. Among them are thousands of children who have suffered limb amputations, making Gaza home to the highest rate of child amputees per capita worldwide.
The roadmap outlines three key phases:
- Restore (Years 1–2): Reactivate essential rehabilitation services and reopen core centers.
- Expand (Years 2–3): Strengthen local capacities and broaden access through community-based care.
- Sustain (Year 3 onwards): Institutionalize governance, secure long-term financing, and build Palestinian professional expertise.
Developed through consultations with Gaza’s rehabilitation stakeholders, by Gaza for Gaza, the initiative represents a unified, Palestinian-led effort to transition from short-term humanitarian relief to a sustainable rehabilitation system that restores mobility and dignity while strengthening the resilience of Gaza’s healthcare institutions.
