The Munib & Angela Masri Foundation underscored its commitment to elevating voices that address pressing social issues, foster solidarity, and celebrate human resilience through the transformative power of art by funding the film “3000 Nights”. Directed by renowned, Palestinian filmmaker Mai M. Masri, known for her focus on women and children in conflict zones and a significant voice in Middle Eastern cinema, the 2015 film delivers a poignant narrative of resilience, sacrifice, and the enduring human spirit.
The story follows Layal, a young Palestinian schoolteacher falsely accused and imprisoned in an Israeli jail. While incarcerated, she discovers she is pregnant and must summon extraordinary strength to raise her child in the harsh prison environment. The film captures her unwavering courage and determination to protect her son while maintaining hope and dignity in the face of relentless adversity. The film received widespread recognition, winning numerous international awards, including the Audience Award for Best Film at the Valladolid International Film Festival, the Youth Jury Prize for Fiction at the International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights (FIFDH), and multiple accolades at the Carthage Film Festival, including Best Screenplay.
