The Munib & Angela Masri Foundation supported the production of the film Palestine 36, a period film, directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Annemarie Jacir. This initiative reflects the Foundation’s enduring commitment to arts and culture, with a particular focus on works that bring the Palestinian narrative to global audiences.
The project was first presented to the Masri Foundation in April of 2023 and subsequently developed into a major film production shot in both Palestine and Jordan. Despite the challenges of filming due to the increasingly tense geopolitical situation, production was successfully completed in November of 2024, underscoring both the determination of the creative team and the importance of long-term Historical and cultural preservation.
The film is about the farmer-led revolt of 1936, which marked the beginning of the largest and longest uprising against Britain’s 30-year rule in Palestine. People from all classes mobilized, and nationalist sentiment spread through the press, schools, and cultural circles. The British, unprepared for the scale of resistance, imposed martial law, deployed over twenty thousand troops, brought in tanks and aircraft, and carried out mass arrests, beatings, and exiles, yet failed to subdue a population of less than one million. The revolt endured for three years and remains arguably the most significant anti-colonial uprising in the British Empire. Centered on the character of Yusuf, the film follows a story of struggle, sacrifice, and resilience in the face of upheaval and repression.
This initiative ensures that Palestinian history and stories continue to be told, recognized, and remembered well into the future.
